What is RobotInfo.Net ?
|
RobotInfo.Net is your Portal to the Robotics world.
If you have been working for some time in the Robotics field,
or if you are simply approaching the subject as a hobbyist,
you may have noticed that there are many sources of information and discussion.
However, it's often difficult to find the right information or the product which satisfies your needs.
Our experience as Forum Administrators of the
Virtual Humans Forum
showed us that there are many people who want to learn and experiment, and who would like to develop their innovative ideas,
but they often ask for guidelines about the best path to reach their goals.
Considering these needs, we decided to create a central repository of selected references,
which comes from our experience in this field.
For each reference you find the link which takes you to the site or product, and a quick description.
All the links we list here are the result of our daily researches. So they are regularly checked,
in order to see if they can be useful to our readers and if they are still active.
In some cases, when we had the opportunity to test directly a product, read a book or
use extensively a site, we also managed to add some short comment about each link.
It is obviously only a personal and subjective evaluation, but we hope it can
help you to find your way among all these links.

What is the meaning of those strange graphic characters on our Home Page?
|
Robotic sites are usually full of images of advanced technology, or science-fiction representation of robots.
We have chosen a different approach.
All the characters represented in our Home Page are details of paintings
by Arcimboldo, an Italian painter of the 16th century, best known for creating grotesque portrait heads
made entirely of such objects as fruits, vegetables, flowers, fish, and books.
He painted representations of these objects on the canvas arranged in such a way
that the whole collection of objects formed a recognizable likeness of the portrait subject.
Why did we choose these characters as symbols for robots?
Because they represent the idea of faking a human being, using several components which are not human at all.
And our future will probably be full of androids, made of components which are electronic and mechanical,
which will become more and more similar to human beings.
When looking at these paintings, it is easy to tell the single components which make up a face,
and to understand that what you are seeing is not a real human being.
The current generation of humanoid robots has only a vague resemblance to real humans.
But the next few decades are promising us great developments in this area, and it is likely
that the youngest readers of this site will be able to live in a new society, where robots
will be a constant presence in everyday life, and it might not be so easy to tell a human from
a robot.
