Penguin Robot PDF Print E-mail

Penguin robot

The Penguin robot is a precision-machined 4" tall biped with an embedded BASIC Stamp 2px24 microcontroller. The Penguin walks forward with a tilt-stride action and turns by sweeping both feet on the ground in opposite directions. This basic biped design works best in the Penguin's small scale. The Penguin's parts have a close-tolerance fit and are designed to make use of precise electronic control.

LEGO Mindstorms NXT PDF Print E-mail

LEGO Mindstorms NXT

Sure, Mindstorms NXT is a toy, but it is an important toy, like a piano or a chemistry set. It's one of those items that engages an imagination and possibly opens doors to new interests. Since our future is surely to be shared with robots--it's already started happening, just look at Roomba--those robots will need, at least initially, humans to program and maintain them. Those people, years from now, will likely remember their experiences with Lego Mindstorms. The main part of the kit is the NXT itself. It's about the size of an iPod (though a bit thicker) with a a loudspeaker, a monochrome LCD, and navigation keys on the front. This is the controller for the robot--it's brain, if you will. It has three ports on top for connecting to the servo motors and four ports on the bottom for connecting to four different sensors: Touch, Light, Sound, and Ultrasonic

i-Que Personal Robot PDF Print E-mail

 i-Que Personal Robot

The i-Que robot moves around like a Roomba, but instead of vacuuming up dust particles, it spits out tons of information. An interactive robot for kids ages 8 years and up, the i-Que can spell, pronounce, and define 80,000 words from the Merriam-Webster Intermediate Dictionary thanks to its text-to-speech technology. In addition to a huge vocabulary, Encyclopedia Britannica supplied fun, educational content for features like "Word of the Day" and "This Day in History" for the robot’s permanent memory. But the 16-bit microprocessor also allows the robot to expand its knowledge base with personal interaction. Using speech recognition, the toy can identify its owner’s voice, have a two-way "conversation," retain new words, and even mimic accents. An included communicator similar to a Blackberry lets you text the i-Que from a remote location in the house and receive response. This device docks on the robot and lets it learn personal information about you, such as your birthday, friends’ names, your calendar of events, and more. The battery-operated i-Que uses twin motors and track balls to easily navigate flat surfaces, is able to work itself out of corners, ducks as it passes under low tables or chairs, and is smart enough to not go over edges of counters, stairs, or other drops. When it starts to run low on power, the robot guides itself back to its docking station to recharge. While he has trivia topics such as sports, animals, history, and more right out of the box, additional cartridges are sold separately on subjects including space, geography, and the human body.
