A Guide to Fixed and Folding Arm Awnings

Awnings add a great deal of visual interest to businesses and homes. However, there are many different types and options available, it can be quite difficult to choose the best one for you.

There are even differently shaped awnings, so, you may be wondering, where should you start?

Don’t worry, you’re reading the right post and we will help you to make the right decisions. By adding an awning to your business or even to your home, it will greatly improve the look and aesthetic of the building. When you install an awning over a window or door, this will actually reduce glare and sun which will naturally improve the energy efficiency inside the building. You can even opt to install an awning over your deck or patio and it will help provide shade from the sun and rain. This will not only protect you and others but will also help to protect your outdoor furniture. When it comes to choosing the best awning for you, you need to consider the fabric, type as well as the overall style. We will now look at a further breakdown of these factors below.

Awning Types

There are basically two types of awnings but these two types are available in many different shapes. The two types include retractable and stationary awnings. In order to choose one, you should know the advantages and disadvantages of both. Here at Design Folding Arm Awnings we specialise in retractable awnings.

The fixed or stationary awnings are as you imagine, permanently fixed and attached to your wall. This is a great type of awning for over a door or window and will help provide protection from the elements. Also, these awnings are very strong and will last quite a long while. With that said, they also need a lot more maintenance in comparison to the other types. Additionally, once they have been attached, their location becomes permanent and cannot be changed. If you need to provide shade and coverage for a wide area, then the awning will require sufficient support.

Next, there are retractable awnings. These types also need to be attached to your business place or home, however, the difference is that you can open or close them whenever you want. This gives you coverage whenever you need it. In order to extend the awning, there is usually either a motorized control or even a hand crank. These type of awnings are perfect for decks and patios. In comparison to the stationary awnings, the retractable types require less maintenance. They can also be attached to walls and even the roof, unlike the stationary ones. In the event of very bad weather, you can even take them down and store them indoors.

There are a few cons of using retractable awnings. These include the fact that they are more expensive than the stationary awnings and they are more expensive to repair.

Since we have just covered the two main types of awnings, you should have a much better idea on the type that you prefer.

Cover Types

Awning covers usually come in two fabrics, i.e. cotton and polyester. These fabrics are then typically coated in either acrylic or vinyl. These two fabrics and treatment types may seem similar, however, there are are a couple of differences that you should be aware of when choosing. Polyester awnings are good for blocking UV rays while allowing some sun to shine through. It is good at dealing with different types of weather. It is a breathable type of fabric and it is very easy to clean by wiping. Next, cotton awnings are a more traditional material for awnings and it is a very strong and waterproof material that will last a long time. In order to clean it, all you need to do is pop it in the washing machine.

When the two types of coating are applied to these two fabrics, they help to improve functionality. The acrylic coating is great for making sure your awning’s color remains bright and it looks good for a long time. However, it does not make it resistant to water or fire. On the other hand, the vinyl coating does make the awning resistant to fire and water, however, it is more likely to fade sooner.

Awning Styles

The style of awning that you choose will have a huge impact on the look of your home or business and can make it truly stand out. Stationary awnings usually come in a wide range of styles whereas retractable awnings are usually only available in certain ornamental styles.

The first style that we will look at are open sided slope awnings. These basically have a very steep slope but as the name suggests, they are open on both sides. In stationary awnings, the open sided slope styles usually have the metal showing on either end. However, with retractable awnings, the frame and bar would differ since these type of awnings need more freedom in order to expand and retract.

Next, the elegant slope awning is quite similar to the open sided slope. The main difference is that there is fabric which covers both of the ends which makes it look more enclosed. This particular style is quite popular.

Another style are rigid valance awnings which are also similar to the two types described above. However, these are more rigid and the valence has a straight edge.

Crescent awnings are also similar to slope awnings but instead of having a straight line, they have a curve that goes inward.

Next, the dome awning is very appealing to many people since they are usually featured in many shows and movies. They have the appearance of a dome and have rounded edges. These types can be shaped like a perfect dome or even elongated, depending on the window or space that they are placed above. For a more classy look, the scroll arm awnings are a good option since they have very detailed support beams. These awnings add something extra to your outdoor space.

The twisted rope awning is another very well known and loved style. In this awning, the main difference is also in the side bars where they are made of twisted metal. There are also spear arm awnings with spears for supports which are quite appealing to many. Lastly, there are also poly-carbonate awnings where you can select one that has a closed support bar or an open one.

New Trends

The following list includes the technological trends I believe will be significant next year:

Personal DNA Sequencing

Each DNA molecule has a specific order of nucleotides. Cutting-edge tools are used to determine the specific order during DNA sequencing. As you can imagine, research in this area will lead to significant medical breakthroughs.
The ability to personalize DNA sequencing could take the field of genetics to every doorstep. Although it may not sound believable, many people have already benefited from this. For example, Angelina Jolie used DNA testing to find out she had an 87% likelihood of developing breast cancer.
In the future, the public will be able to have their DNA tested and know their chances of acquiring severe or terminal diseases. In 2016, this dream could become a reality for the public.

Optical Interconnect

In 2013, Intel displayed a snippet of this technology by showing us a transfer rate of 1TB per second was possible. Light Peak is the name of the optical interconnect product. It was endorsed by experts as a way to kill USB 3.0.
For the public, they do not care whether the technology is Light Peak or something different; they just want a lightning fast connection. From the business perspective, there is a meaningful difference. Ultra-fast connections mean high-speed data transfer, improving the delivery of work and possibly no downtime.
Businesses can benefit from this technology by improving their growth and will keep their hopes alive for Optical Internet.

Interactive Holographic Displays

Although holograms are not a new technology, 3D hologram displays are completely new. The technology will revolutionize the technology industry and is state of the art.
The second generation of this technology is an interactive hologram display. Although the technology is complex, it includes these features:

  • Hologram optical lenses
  • Digital controller
  • Laser projector
  • Motion sensor

With the interactive display, users can touch icons in midair and perform different activities. The ability to interact is caused by the kinetic motion sensor. This is a cutting-edge feature found in many wearable devices.

3D City Maps

Although this technology is already in use, the field of architecture is investing in the technology because it has important future benefits for them. Here is a video showing a 3D map of London. So far, it is not interactive, which will happen in the future.
Since it is not interactive, developers use programming software and a computer screen to show clients proposed development areas and the manner in which construction will occur. If it were interactive, the clients could make modifications directly on the 3D projects and in real time.
I believe the merger of 3D holographic displays and architectural rendering could turn this idea into reality. 2016 might be the year when it happens.

Collision-proof Cars

During 2016 we might see the first crash-proof cars on the market. Other technologies would need to be in place for this to happen, such as driver alert systems, sonar, and custom radars for automobiles. Traffic accidents and fatalities are an ongoing concern in the US and in several other countries. Crash-proof cars could possibly lower the rate of serious injuries and deaths from automobile accidents.

Space Adventures

Even during the beginning of the year, I was not very hopeful about this happening. NASA’s announcement regarding the colonization of Mars by 2030 has renewed my hopes. I am sure we will see major improvements in the space tourism and adventure market during 2016. According to an article published by the Observer, 2016 is destined to be the year when space tourism becomes a reality.
